Libby, Montana is a documentary about WR Grace, a US multi-national corporation that knowingly exposed a trusting community of workers and their families to asbestos, then shifted billions in assets to avoid liability. For nearly 30 years, residents of the quaint town of Libby, Mont., worked for W. R. Grace, mining and processing an insulation product known as vermiculite. Little did they know, they were risking their lives. This compelling documentary follows the plight of these courageous Americans as they band together to lift one another up from throes of illness and take on the all-powerful Grace corporation disregarded safety concerns that led to death and damage of a whole town. They then declared bankruptcy and left the bill to the government. Ronald Reagan placed Mr. Grace in charge of a federal position to trim the size of the government, thereby preventing anyone in power from actually taking action or easily ruling against Grace. The story of Libby, its residents and the workers of Grace Co. is moving, infuriating and a real indictment of the deregulation spree of the Reagan years, continued by Bush One, not helped much by Clinton, and taken to an obscene extreme by Bush Two.

It is estimated that the raw ore contained as much as 26%
asbestos. LaDou refers to the worldwide distribution and use of asbestos as the "asbestos
epidemic. " Unlike acute illnesses, chronic diseases such as asbestosis are unrelenting, rarely
cured, and require persons to deal with the associated health challenges on a daily
basis. Access to health care providers, especially health care specialists such as
pulmonologists, is an ongoing challenge for rural dwellers. Only 10% of physicians
in the U. practice in rural areas although nearly 21% of Americans live in these
areas. Psychosocial response to chronic illness significantly impacts an individual's
ability to manage illness. Although researchers have established the association between
specific exposure pathways and radiographic abnormalities in occupationally exposed
vermiculite workers, the slow-progressing, but far-reaching bio-psychosocial health
effects and health care needs of persons exposed to asbestos have not been adequately
described or studied.

It is one more important documentation of the failure of Free-Market Gone Wild. An especially timely documentary when Republican and Tea Party stooges whine that corporations need weaker environmental laws. It's a lesson in just how bad things get without strong government intervention. One expert says you expect environmental travesties of this magnitude in poor countries, but not in the US. The film concerns the biggest environmental-crime prosecution in U. S. history. Isn't it odd that everyone knows of BP's oil disaster in the Gulf of Mexico, and the Exxon Valdez oil spill, yet most of us are unaware of how The Grace Corporation left a Montana town to die. I lived in Libby from age 12 to 20. I used to play in mountains of that Zonolite ore. What kids will do, climbing to the top and rolling down to the bottom. Only did it once though. Afterwards I couldn't breathe very well and thought I was having an asthma attack and my clothes itched so badly I had to take them off and scrub in the shower for hours to help the itching.

The overall goal of this study is to establish a more comprehensive understanding
of the bio-psychosocial health status and health service needs for persons exposed
to asbestos. To accomplish this goal, the national Libby cohort will be studied to
achieve the following aims:
Describe the bio-psychosocial health status of persons exposed to Libby asbestos through
an examination of the severity of chronic illness, depression, acceptance of illness,
and stress. Explore the associations among severity of chronic illness, depression, acceptance
of illness, and stress. Evaluate access, availability, convenience, and financial aspects of care among the
national Libby cohort. The widespread asbestos contamination in the Libby area and extensive vermiculite
shipping history present a unique opportunity to explore the comprehensive and long-term
health affects of ARD in a national cohort. Results of the study will provide direction
for health policymakers and service providers. The proposed study is consistent with
the goals of the federally mandated Healthy People 2010 which seeks to improve the
health of the nation by realizing two overall goals: (a) increasing the quality and
years of healthy life, and (b) eliminating health disparities among populations.
W. Grace's executives were charged over $250, 000, 000 to clean up the 1, 890 contaminated residences. They were subject to a whopping 270, 000 lawsuits, 120, 000 of which they are yet to pay off. The company was even indicted on ten counts for covering up evidence and causing over 400 deaths. As is all too common in similar corporate prosecutions, the charges were dropped in 2009. Fortunately for the people of Libby, the EPA has now replaced W. Grace as the number one employer in town, and has lowered the asbestos concentration in the air by 10, 000%. Sadly, risks still remain: the town's children are instructed to search for signs of asbestos whenever in public or at home - a quite terrifying concept for any parent. Since the investigation, however, something quite unique has happened in Libby. Since the EPA has deemed Libby the first "public health emergency" in US history, any resident in Libby (and the neighboring town of Troy) diagnosed with ARD (Asbestos Related Disease) was deemed immediately eligible for full single-payer Medicare coverage provided by the US government.

Libby, Montana has always been a logging and mining town, and its biggest employment boom occurred in 1919 when a vermiculite quarry was discovered a few miles outside the city limits, a mineral crucial to home insulation, fireproofing and other lucrative uses. This profitable find captured the attention of W. R. Grace and Company, who purchased the mine in 1963. Business boomed, and the company was soon the exporter of 80% of the world's vermiculite. There was only one catch for W. Grace: The mine was contaminated with the dust of the highly toxic and lethal mineral asbestos. W. Grace knew well of these dangers, and even discussed its risks in private memos. But to sustain its profit, they didn't let any of the miners or the town's residents know. Instead, they discarded their asbestos-filled waste on the playgrounds, the baseball fields, and the roads of the town. It took over 2, 000 severe illnesses and 10% of the population dying of cancer and lung scarring for the company to be shut down in 1990.
These asbestos fibers eventually settled on the small community for decades, like a mostly invisible and deadly snow. In the meantime, townspeople from every walk of life breathed in what they thought was fresh Montana air, unaware that cancer-causing strands permeated the atmosphere and ended up lodged in their lungs. "A miner knew if he was killed his family would be taken care of, but they never thought for a moment they were harming their children or their wives. Then people started coming forward with lung problems who had nothing to do with the mine, " explained Benefield. Prosecutors sought to prove that W. Grace knew they were killing miners and poisoning their families and those in the community. But in 2009, shockingly, the company received an acquittal of charges that it knowingly harmed people. Meanwhile, the EPA began investigations of the area in 1999 after mounting citizen, local government, and media concern. A year later, the site was placed on the Superfund Program's National Priorities List — eventually placing staff in Libby to supervise and execute the clean-up of an entire town, including a contaminated mine site.
